Will Kybella® Get Rid Of My Double Chin?

A double chin is embarrassing, whether you are a man or a woman. Nobody wants people to stare at their double chin rather than their face while talking with them. You don’t want to face the mirror each morning. Your double chin is making you look much older than you actually are. There are options to remove the double in the chin, and Kybella® is one of them. Does it really work? You ask. Yes. We here at Revive Medical Center use this procedure successfully in many of our patients.

What Is Kybella®?

Kybella® is an injection that helps reduce the excess fat under your chin that causes the double chin. If you follow cosmetic procedures closely, you know that injection-therapies are becoming more popular than ever to treat many issues, including double chins and under-eye dark circles. Kybella® is deoxycholic acid approved by the FDA to reduce the appearance of double chins in patients who are 18 years old or older. In fact, Kybella® was determined to a safe and effective treatment for double chins in clinical trials where more than 80 percent of patients saw marked improvement in reducing their double-chin fat.

What Can I Expect During a Kybella® Treatment?

We’ll examine you before your Kybella® treatment and make pre-procedure recommendations. In general, this will include no acetaminophen or ibuprofen before your procedure. During the treatment, which should last about 15 to 20 minutes, we’ll clean and sterilize the injection area underneath your chin, called the submental area, and then inject Kybella® anywhere from 20 to 30 times throughout the area. In severe cases, we might need to use up to 50 Kybella® injections. Naturally found in your body, the deoxycholic acid found in Kybella® will absorb the fat underneath your chin, thereby reducing the double chin and providing a smoother and younger-looking submental area.

Are There Any Side Effects?

As with any medical procedure, there are side effects with Kybella®, but they are minimal. You might feel discomfort and pain in the injection areas, and some patients experience bruising, redness, and minor swelling. You may also feel a little numb under the chin, but these side effects are temporary and generally only last about one to two weeks. Depending on the severity of your double chin, you will need anywhere from four to six treatments before your double chin is gone for good, but some patients notice a difference after their second treatment.
