What Is Cellulite?

Most people who have cellulite believe that it’s a type of fat that forms on their bodies. Revive Medical Center wants you to know that cellulite isn’t fat and it isn’t your fault. The more that you know about cellulite, the more likely you’ll be to make it less visible.

“Cottage Cheese” Skin

Cellulite refers to the appearance that skin can take on when it puckers up due to fatty tissue pushing through the bands that connect your muscles to your skin. It’s commonly described as looking like cottage cheese. Most people who are prone to cellulite tend to have cellulite on their abdomen, thighs, hips, and buttocks. Women are more likely to develop cellulite than men are, but that doesn’t mean that men don’t experience issues with cellulite.

Causes of Cellulite

There isn’t one single cause of cellulite. There are hereditary factors, which means that if family members have dealt with cellulite, your risk of developing it increases as well. Other factors are involved, though. Skin texture, overall body weight, and even muscle tone can all contribute to cellulite formation. But just being overweight isn’t a guarantee of having cellulite. Plenty of people who are in great shape also have cellulite.

Preventing Cellulite

Every person who is at risk of developing cellulite is different, but there might be some things that you can do to prevent cellulite. One possible solution that is a great idea anyway is to make sure that you’re getting plenty of water every day. Massage can help, as can exercising on a regular basis. Many people also find that dry brushing is helpful.

Who Is Most at Risk of Developing Cellulite?

Women are more likely to develop cellulite, as mentioned earlier. Many women find that they develop cellulite after becoming pregnant, because of changes that can occur in the body. As people age, their skin becomes thinner, which can also make cellulite more obvious. People who are sedentary may be more likely to have visible cellulite but remember that lots of active people do develop cellulite, too.

The biggest thing to know about cellulite is that it isn’t fat, and you haven’t done anything wrong if you’ve got visible cellulite.
