What Causes Male Menopause?

Low testosterone levels cause male menopause. Just as a woman’s estrogen level decreases as she ages, a man’s testosterone level decreases. Once a man turns 40, his testosterone level will decrease slowly but surely. Some men breeze through this male change of life easily and without much trouble. Other men suffer from one or more of the following symptoms of male menopause.

Decreased Bone Density

Unfortunately, older men can suffer from osteoporosis just as easily as older women can. It’s important to get bone density tests regularly in your elder years to make sure you do not have osteoporosis. Low testosterone levels can reduce the bone density and cause breakage problems.

Depression/Moodiness

Some men go through life without any depression or moodiness; they maintain enough testosterone that they are in the normal range even when they are older. Other men find themselves depressed and moody. They may also have difficulty concentrating or staying focused.

Decreased Sex Drive

Unfortunately, this depression accompanied by the low testosterone level can make sex seem as if it is more trouble than it is worth. Many men complain that their sex drive has decreased as they have aged. This is definitely a sign that the testosterone levels are lower than normal.

Erectile Dysfunction

You may also experience erectile dysfunction if your testosterone is extremely low. This can be disheartening for you and your partner, but it isn’t the end of the world. It is common in older men and can be treated. Better yet, the low testosterone can also be treated.

Insomnia/Fatigue

Unfortunately, both men and women can become insomniacs when they are going through menopause. This means you will have trouble falling asleep and sleeping throughout the night. Consequently, this lack of sleep will also reduce your energy level and leave you fatigued.

Low Sperm Count

A lack of testosterone can also affect your sperm count. If you are trying to get your partner pregnant and have problems, you may not be producing enough sperm. This can be attributed to low testosterone and other medical problems that need to be tended to.

Weight Gain/Muscle Loss

Finally, one of the most frustrating symptoms of low testosterone is weight gain, especially because you gain it around your waist. You will also notice that your muscle tone is much looser than it used to be. You may have a hard time building muscle mass with low testosterone.
