What Causes Hair Loss

A full head of healthy and shiny hair makes you look younger. This, alone, is anti-aging. If you are losing your hair, you will look older. There’s no way around this, especially since baldness is part of the aging process in most men and some women. Thankfully, hair loss can be treated. Let’s talk about the causes of hair loss below. Once we’ve determined why you are losing your hair, we can treat the loss properly.

Heredity

Baldness is hereditary, and heredity is the most common cause of baldness. If your father was bald, and his father was bald, and so on, you have a high risk of going bald yourself. When your baldness is caused by your genes, you have androgenic alopecia, or male/female-pattern baldness.

Hormone Changes

As we get older, we stop producing our growth hormones and sex hormones. In men, this means low levels of HGH and testosterone. In women, this means low levels of HGH and estrogen. Unfortunately, this can lead to hair loss in some cases, as can undiagnosed medical conditions.

Medications/Treatments

As you already know, cancer treatments can cause hair loss. In addition, medications to treat arthritis, depression, gout, heart problems, and high blood pressure can also cause hair loss. If you started losing your hair after you were prescribed a new medication, this could be the culprit.

Radiation Therapy

You may lose your hair if you undergo radiation therapy for a brain tumor or another head tumor. In most cases, your hair should grow back. This being said, some people experience pattern baldness that does not go away after they have completed their radiation therapy.

Stress

Extreme physical or emotional stress can make you lose your hair. The shock from an extremely stressful event can cause partial or total baldness. It can also make your hair turn gray. Generally, this type of hair loss is not permanent. Once you handle the underlying stressor, your hair will grow back.

Harsh Treatment

Finally, if your hair is in a ponytail every day, you could start losing it. Anything that pulls the hair tight constantly, such as cornrows, can cause hair loss. Excessive styling, coloring, permanents, or hot-oil treatments can also make the hair fall out. Be gentle with your hair.
