If you notice that you have a physical reaction to something you eat every time you eat it, you likely have a food allergy. Revive Medical Center can help. We diagnose food allergies so you know exactly what it is you are allergic to so you can avoid it. Here are the most common food allergies.
Lactose Intolerance
Lactose intolerance is common in babies and toddlers. This is an allergic reaction to cow’s milk. The most common signs of lactose intolerance include bloating and gas after you’ve consumed cow’s milk or a product that is made from cow’s milk as well as diarrhea and hives.
Eggs
Children can also be allergic to eggs. As with lactose intolerance, many children will outgrow their egg allergy. This doesn’t mean that adults cannot be allergic to eggs; they can. If you are allergic to eggs, you may feel sick to your stomach every time you eat them or end up with hives.
Tree Nuts
A tree nut allergy is different from a peanut allergy. If you are allergic to tree nuts, you cannot consume almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, macadamia nuts, pine nuts, pistachios, or walnuts. Many people who suffer from this food allergy go into anaphylactic shock if they consume tree nuts.
Peanuts
Peanuts can also cause severe allergic reactions. Many people in the United States are allergic to peanuts. If you have a family history of peanut allergies, you are more susceptible to being allergic to peanuts yourself.
Shellfish
If you are allergic to shellfish, you cannot consume crayfish, lobster, prawns, scallops, shrimp, or squid. Your body is allergic to the proteins that are found in shellfish. The most common protein allergy in shellfish is tropomyosin.
Wheat/Gluten
As with a shellfish allergy, if you are allergic to wheat or gluten intolerant, you are allergic to the proteins found in wheat. This is called celiac disease, and more and more Americans are finding that they cannot tolerate wheat or products that contain gluten.
Soy
Another common allergy in children is soy. Many infants cannot tolerate formula that is made from soy or soymilk. Toddlers under the age of three can also suffer from a soy allergy. Seventy percent of the children who have a soy allergy under three grow out of it.
Finally, Revive Medical Center in Lawrenceville, GA, can also diagnose a fish allergy. Some people are allergic to fish alongside being allergic to shellfish. If you suspect that you have a food allergy, set up an appointment at our clinic today for an allergy test.
