Pros & Cons of Using Apple Cider Vinegar

Every year there is a new health fad that promises big changes for your life. From claims about new medical breakthroughs to ancient secrets that have been rediscovered, there are always new – and new again – secrets to a healthy, long life.

Apple cider vinegar is one of those ‘new again’ discoveries with health pros and cons. The most renown type of vinegar on the market, apple cider vinegar has been used for hundreds of years for everything for skincare to household cleaning.

When it comes to health, vinegar can be used for weight loss, reduced cholesterol and lowered blood sugar. Likewise, there are some side effects that can be harmful.

Let’s explore the pros and cons of apple cider vinegar.

The Pros:

  • Positive effect on diabetes. Apple cider vinegar helps lower blood glucose levels in people with Type 2 Diabetes. People who take two tablespoons before bedtime have been shown to lower their glucose levels from 4-6%.
  • Better blood pressure and heart health. Patients who use apple cider vinegar a few times per week report lower blood pressure and improved heart capability.
  • Minimizing cancer. Vinegar has been shown in labs to either kill or slow the growth rate of cancer cells.
  • Losing weight. Vinegar helps you feel full and more satisfied after a meal, so some people mix a tablespoon of the vinegar with a full glass of water.
  • Healthy looking skin. Vinegar can be used to treat sunburn and acne. It can even be used as a facial toner.

The Cons:

  • Apple cider is acidic. It is harsh to the throat, erodes tooth enamel and can cause contact burns on the skin when it is not diluted.
  • Lowers potassium. Long term use can cause the depletion of potassium, which can lead to osteoporosis, or brittle bones throughout the body.
  • Interferes with prescription medicines. Vinegar can interfere with some diuretics used for symptoms associated with heart disease.
  • Diabetic check. Because vinegar contains chromium, it can lead to the sudden lowering of insulin.
