More people are finding work in warehouses due to COVID-19. People have lost their jobs and must make a living elsewhere, and with the boost in online ordering, warehouses are becoming huge employment hubs. Despite extensive safety training, it’s easy to get injured in a warehouse. Revive Medical Center treats patients who have suffered from the following five common warehouse injuries.
1. Overexertion
Whether trained improperly or pushing their bodies to the limit, many warehouse workers end up with overexertion injuries, such as hernias or neck, shoulder, and back damage. This comes from lifting too much, carrying more weight than the body can handle, and twisting the wrong way while carrying a heavy load. A common overexertion injury is a torn rotator cuff, which is extremely painful.
2. Repetitive Motion
A warehouse worker can get injured by repetitive motion alone or by repetitive motion and overexertion at the same time. Repetitive motion injuries are caused by moving the same way all day long. For example, carpel and/or cubital tunnel syndrome from using the arms, particularly the elbows and wrists, too much. Often, warehouse employees push themselves to meet quotas.
3. Slips/Falls
Warehouse floors can be slippery, especially when they are wet. If it’s raining outside, people will track water in, or water might make its way into the warehouse through the loading and unloading docks. It’s very easy to fall in a warehouse if the floors are slippery, and injuries resulting from the fall could include back and neck injuries, sprained joints, or even broken bones or ligament tears.
4. Falling Objects
Many warehouse workers are injured by falling objects. Whether the objects fall because they weren’t stored properly or the worker accidentally pulls objects down on himself, depending on how the person was hit, he could have a serious head, neck, and spinal trauma. Concussions, herniated cervical and lumbar discs, neck injuries, and torn rotator cuffs from falling objects are common.
5. Forklift Accident
Finally, forklift accidents occur in warehouses when the operator is not trained properly. Other causes of forklift accidents include warehouse facilities that are too crowded, forklifts that aren’t maintained properly, and, frankly, freak accidents. Tragically, some forklift accidents result in serious injury or death. Injuries include head, back, and neck trauma, as well as trauma to the arms and legs.
