What is Morpheus8?
Morpheus8 is a brand of radiofrequency microneedling made by InMode. A handpiece with a grid of very fine needles enters the skin and releases radiofrequency energy at a set depth. The needles create controlled micro-injuries, and the energy heats the tissue around them; both trigger the body to make new collagen. Because the skin is punctured, treatment is normally done with numbing cream, and most people have redness and small pinpoint marks for a few days. It has been widely available in the U.S. since 2019.
What is XERF?
XERF is a monopolar radiofrequency skin-tightening system made by Cynosure Lutronic. It received U.S. FDA clearance in August 2025. A handpiece with built-in cooling passes controlled radiofrequency energy through the surface of the skin and warms the tissue underneath, which stimulates collagen. The system combines two frequencies with three depth settings and ten intensity levels so the provider can adjust it to the area and the person. Nothing punctures the skin, so numbing cream is usually not needed and there is no planned recovery time. A face-and-neck session takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area and the number of pulses.
Is it painless? No, and be wary of anyone who says it is. Patients describe it as tolerable but not nothing: a deep, sudden warmth, sharper over bony or low-fat spots like the jawline and temples. The cooling tip takes the edge off, the provider adjusts intensity to you, and you can stop at any point. Some patients ask for numbing cream and that is fine.

“I felt tighter right after, then it faded. Did it fail?”
No. The tightening you feel the same day is from heat contracting existing collagen, and it fades within about a week. The result you are paying for comes from new collagen, which takes 2 to 6 months. Judge either treatment at three months, not three days.
“Will it hollow out my face?”
This is the most common worry we hear about any heat-based treatment, and it is a fair one for people with thin faces. Fat loss is a settings-and-operator issue more than a device issue: it is why the assessment looks at your face shape before we choose depth and intensity, and why we treat conservatively on thin faces. “Is it worth $1,800 to $3,000 or is it hype?”
XERF is new in the U.S. (cleared 2025), so there is less long-term data than for Thermage or Morpheus8, and some of the enthusiasm online is marketing. What is not hype: it is a genuine monopolar RF platform with cooling, it is the only one of these options with no needles and no planned downtime, and patients treated for mild-to-moderate laxity report visible improvement by a few months. If you have significant sagging, an honest provider will tell you no non-surgical device replaces a facelift, and we will.
“Does the device matter more than the person running it?”

When XERF is the better choice
