Spring is almost here – wait a minute! Weren’t we just writing about the holidays? Time flies! With spring comes birds, bees, sunshine… and miserable allergies for many. You can take steps now to help prevent you from having a miserable spring. After all, people are meant to enjoy beautiful spring weather. Revive Medical Center offers the following five tips to help you survive spring allergies.
Spring Clean
Do your spring cleaning now (with a mask on) to help prevent spring allergies. Clean everything from the cobwebs on your ceiling to the dust bunnies underneath the furniture. Call for a professional HVAC cleaning, too, as the technicians will clean your ductwork and vents to ensure your AC doesn’t blow dust and pollen into your home. Check for allergy-causing mold, too, and have it mitigated from your home.
Don’t Forget the Carpets and Furniture
Your carpeting and furniture trap dirt, dust, pet dander, and pollen, so add them to your spring-cleaning list. Vacuum everything thoroughly, and if you have a carpet shampooer, now is the time to shampoo your carpets to get rid of allergens that have been ground deep into the carpeting by foot traffic. If you don’t have your own shampooer, rent one or call a professional service for your carpets and flooring.
Check Your Filters
Check your home’s air filters to make sure they are clean. Whether clean or dirty, replace them with allergy-prevention filters. They cost a little more but they also do a better job of clearing your air of allergens. For those with severe allergies or allergy-induced asthma, invest in a HEPA room filter. These filters clear the air of allergens not trapped by your home air filter or swept up by the vacuum.
Keep the House Closed
This is depressing but if you suffer miserably through the spring allergy season it’s best to keep your doors and windows closed. Why introduce the very things that are making you ill into your indoor environment. You can still enjoy the warm sunshine through your windows, but keep everything closed up to prevent pollen from blowing into your home. Wear a mask outdoors, too, if necessary.
See a Professional
“Dr. Google” has all kinds of diagnoses and most of them are written by people who aren’t medical professionals and/or incorrect. Rather than trust an unreliable source, get your allergies tested by a medical professional so you know exactly what you’re allergic to and what the best treatment options are. It could be that you’re allergic to a certain bush in your yard which can be removed easily.
