4 Types of Workers’ Compensation Benefits

Workers’ Compensation Insurance, also called workers’ comp, exists to help and protect workers who were injured while on the job, and can provide enormous benefits to workers so that they can recover in the timely manner. The four different types of Workers’ Compensation Benefits you can receive include:

  • Medical Coverage
  • Wage Benefits
  • Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Death Benefits, in the case of the death of a family member

In familiarizing yourself with these four types of workers’ comp benefits, you can remain an informed worker, and better advocate for yourself when injuries do eventually happen.

Medical Coverage

Workers’ Compensation medical coverage includes all the costs of necessary treatments to treat your workplace injury or disability. These benefits should not be limited to a specific dollar amount, and if the treatment required is long term or ongoing, the medical coverage will take care of it, as well as any deductibles or copays.

Medical coverage may include things like medications, nursing care, hospitalizations, necessary medical equipment, and any other vital care.

Wage Benefits

Another common benefit from Workers’ Compensation is wage benefits. With wage benefits, you can have a percentage of missed wages from days needed to be taken off from work that might not be covered by paid time off. This is known as disability benefits, and you can receive them if your workplace injury has left you unable to work your job either temporarily or permanently.

Vocational Rehabilitation

Vocational rehabilitation is specifically designed to help injured workers make the transition back into work after having spent necessary time off. Vocational rehabilitation includes but is not limited to career counseling, job training, and other assistance in finding employment. If you have suffered injuries that prevent you from working your previous job, you can file a Workers’ Compensation claim for vocational rehabilitation in order to re-enter the workforce in a different field.

Death Benefits

If a family member has died as a result of a workplace injury, Workers’ Compensation can award death benefits to the affected party’s spouse, children, parents, or other immediate family members. These death benefits include covering the costs of funeral, and burial or cremation expenses, as well as compensating the worker’s family for their loss.
