There have been numerous medical breakthroughs over the last decade for patients with Alzheimer’s disease. While this horrible disease has yet to have a cure, there are ways to stave some of the symptoms that accompany this neurological disorder – at least for a little while. Studies have shown that four medication types prescribed for other conditions may actually help some patients suffering from Alzheimer’s. Revive Medical Center lists what they are below, as they are promising in the fight against the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
Blood Pressure Medications
Johns Hopkins University conducted a study on ACE inhibitors and ARB medications used to treat blood pressure. What they found was surprising. Certain blood pressure medications reduced study participants’ risk of contracting Alzheimer’s disease by 50 percent. Astounding and confusing, as Johns Hopkins University has yet to determine how ACE and ARB meds prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
Diabetes Medication
In another study, Lancaster University tested how Victoza, a diabetes medication, interacted with Alzheimer’s disease. Using laboratory mice with late-stage Alzheimer’s, a two-month treatment of Victoza reduced the beta-amyloid plaque caused by Alzheimer’s by 30 percent. Further research showed Victoza also helped protect brain cells from further damage caused by the disease.
RA Medication
Most rheumatoid arthritis patients use NSAIDs and DMARDs to treat the pain, swelling, and joint damage from which they suffer. Other medications, such as the biologic Enbrel, are also used in severe patients. In a University of Southampton study, Enbrel helped reduce inflammation in the brain caused by traditional Alzheimer’s treatments. Experts hope that Enbrel can also stop Alzheimer’s brain damage.
Cholesterol Medications
As you know, statin medications help reduce high cholesterol and what was once thought to cause memory loss is now showing signs of memory improvement in Alzheimer’s patients. When taken at high doses, scientists have found that statins actually reduce the risk of dementia, the condition umbrella under which Alzheimer’s falls. Further studies are required, however, as statins have side effects.
Few things are more difficult for a patient and his or her loved ones than Alzheimer’s disease. Revive Medical Center in Lawrenceville, GA, offers a comprehensive treatment plan for Alzheimer’s patients that addresses this devastating condition in four ways. We collect data and pinpoint how our patients contracted Alzheimer’s disease, and then we customize a treatment plan to suit their specific needs. We also offer support services to the patient and his or her loved ones.
