2019 Wellness Trends

With Americans consistently striving for improved health, each year seems to get better and better. Watchdog groups expose toxic chemicals in everyday products and big-name companies grow more accountable for the food, beverages and toiletries they peddle. Here’s a look at some of the top health and wellness trends of 2019.

Scientific Renewal

Vigilant consumers are sick and tired of outrageous or even fraudulent claims. Goop (Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle company) recently settled a lawsuit arguing some of its products lack sound scientific foundation and Facebook deleted pages associated with fringe medicine to crack down on marauding traders in pseudoscience.

Awkward as Normal

Many products concerning issues once viewed as taboo are coming out as mainstream. Here are a few examples:

  • Discreet and comfortable ways to control bladder leakage
  • Products that focus on female hair loss
  • Self-care products for those going through puberty
  • Vaginal therapy devices

Home Fitness Revival

With Peloton dominating the home exercise industry, other companies have stepped up to introduce rowing machines, boxing gloves, and convenient weightlifting machines. Even Peloton has expanded into areas like yoga and treadmills. Although there are still constraints to working out at home, as these products normalize, prices will decrease and the tech will make them more accessible than ever.

Fertility Tracking and Care

With Silicon Valley slowly opening its doors to more female-driven startups, many are focusing on fertility issues, including sperm testing, ovulation tracking, benefits solutions and affordability. While the industry includes many doctors, companies are also led by regular women who have struggled with conception.

Inclusion

With a recent spotlight on today’s lack of diversity, some companies have come forward to reach once-ignored audiences. For example, Stacey and Jasmine Johnson cofounded Black Zen, an online meditation guide whose content concentrates on the daily struggles of women of color. While yoga and emotional wellness were once viewed as the practices of privileged, Lululemon-buying hemp enthusiasts, industry luminaries are now starting to see the benefit of a wider market.

More Plants, Less Meat

Demand for interesting meatless varieties is ever-growing, and companies are saying Challenge Accepted. Along with lab-grown meat, industry regulars have already created faux eggs, shelf-stable tuna (made from chickpeas, fava beans and lentils), and shrimp alternative (made from algae).

Regardless of your current state of health, it’s never been a better time to prioritize self-care. Whether it’s meatless Mondays, living room yoga, or a more open dialogue about uncomfortable bodily issues, 2019 wants you to improve.
